Product Description

When Mehmet Oz or any of New York's leading doctors has a patient whose life depends on losing weight, they call on Joel Fuhrman, M.D. In EAT TO LIVE, Dr. Fuhrman offers his healthy, effective, and scientifically proven plan for shedding radical amounts of weight quickly, and keeping it off. Losing weight under Dr. Fuhrman's plan is not about willpower, it is about knowledge. The key to this revolutionary diet is the idea of nutrient density, as expressed by the simple formula Health=Nutrients/Calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories is high, fat melts away and health is restored. Losing 20 pounds in two to three weeks is just the beginning. The more high-nutrient food Dr. Fuhrman's patients consume, the more they are satisfied with fewer calories, and the less they crave fat and high-calorie foods. Designed for people who must lose 50 pounds or more in a hurry, EAT TO LIVE works for every dieter, even those who want to lose as little as 10 pounds quickly. No willpower required-just knowledge!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat to Live
You want to be healthy read this book and his 2-book set Eat for health also by J. Furhman.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice from a Questionable Source
The overarching theme to take away from my review of this book is that I think it's excellent. I was really astounded to learn Furhman's theory on how the appestat is satiated by the level of nutrients in food, not in the quantity. I also enjoyed the part about calcium absorption. I am ready to begin my Six-Week Plan and I'm looking forward to breaking my addiction to overeating, sodium, and fatty foods. On the whole, this book is excellent advice and, even though aimed at those with serious illness or disease, is great for me.

The one thing that occurred to me as I read this book, however, is the language that is used to support the science. Furhman opts out of the declarative in many of his conclusions, which makes me think he knows that this is not proven. I am amazed that his publisher did not take one look at the book and hand it back to him, saying, "If it's science, prove it." Instead, he dances.

"If you have gained even as little as ten pounds since the age of eighteen or twenty, then you -could- be at significant increased risk for health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes." [Emphasis Added]

"Whole wheat that is finely ground is absorbed into the bloodstream fairly rapidly and -should- not be considered as wholesome as more coarsely ground and grittier whole grains." [Emphasis Added]

Fuhrman references "observational studies" in multiple places. This phrase makes me extremely cautious, especially coming from a learned professional. Lastly, and most tellingly, is this sentence. And for every author who wants me to take his or her work seriously, I implore you to rethink the use of this phrase.

"-Apparently-, excessive vitamin A is potentially a problem in humans, too. . ." [Emphasis Added]

What does this even mean? To whom is it apparent? He further modifies with "potentially", which makes me think even he knows that this claim is unsupported. In law school, we called a statement like this "illusory".

To dial back my criticism, I do not doubt any particular claim made by Fuhrman. On the contrary, I believe every word of it! But anyone who uses this language to present facts about nutrition makes me suspect that it is not entirely truthful or there is substantial evidence to the contrary and the author does not wish to explore it.

My biggest problem is two instances in which Dr. Fuhrman attempts to convince you that you know better than your doctor.

"Do not expect to receive valuable health advice from your typical doctor. Physicians usually do not help; they rush through their patient appointments, especially in the current HMO climate, because they are paid so poorly for each visit and are pressured to see as many patients as possible each day. Your physician is likely doing just as poorly as you are and eating just as unhealthfully or worse. After reading this book, you could improve his health and reduce his risk of premature death more than he could help yours. Even when physicians offer their fullest time and effort, their recommendations are invariably too mild to have a significant benefit."

"'My doctor noted that my complexion had turned yellowish and told me to cut back on foods containing carotene. . .' Tell your doctor it is he who has the dangerous skin tone."

This is more than just a little scary. As I understand it, each and every one of us is just a little different, and our health problems are also just as unique. All health, exercise, and well-being programs I have ever come across recommend working with your physician, not against him or her. I realize Fuhrman is not out to make friends with this book (especially with other diet plans' creators), but he seriously comes close to holding a grudge against your general practitioner. He's making blanket recommendations, based on shaky observational science (see above) and telling you to disregard their advice? It seems almost criminal, but I guess you're expected to be smart enough to know that he really has no interest in you beyond the cover price you just forked over. See if you can spot the problem with this statement (hint: Furhman is a high-protein-diet guru!).

"High-protein-diet gurus usually claim that they hold the truth and that all other doctors and scientists are wrong."

In the end, it's just a little disappointing that this book was marketed to be about losing weight. You can clearly see that this is the influence on the publisher to have Fuhrman peddle his wares wearing the cheap cloth of quick pounds falling off. It's really "eating healthy results in losing weight results in a long, healthy life" that is the key to this plan. You'll have to pardon me, however: I need to chop up some vegetables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Dr. Fuhrman!
After my last visit to my Dr.s office this past May, my physician said that my cholesterol was inching up at around 179 (medicated 10mg Lipitor) my blood sugar was at 99 and my blood pressure was averaging about 139/90 (medicated 20mg Lisinpril). Another issue came up, my AST levels were close to 200, which scared the daylights out of me. My weight was up to 223 as well, which was very disappointing because I've been trying to lose weight all year. Well, I found this book one week after that dread full visit to the Dr.s office. After reading it, I figured I'd give Dr. Fuhrman's diet plan a try for at least one week. Well, I've been on "that plan" ever since (over 3 months now) and guess what?

1. I lost over 30 pounds (down to 191)
2. I no longer take any Lipitor (without medication my cholesterol is at 150)
3. I no longer take any blood pressure medicine (average BP is 120/78)
4. Glucose is down to 82
5. AST levels back to normal

All I can say is WOW! Up until reading this book, I was on BP medicine for the past 6 years. The cholesterol medicine was more recent, just 2 years. Now I am back to normal!!!! And, I plan to keep it this way. Nutrient rich low calorie foods all the way baby!

Product Description

For the first time in our history, scientists are uncovering astounding medical evidence about dieting -- and why so many of us struggle with our weight and the size of our waists. Now researchers are unraveling biological secrets about such things as why you crave chocolate or gorge at buffets or store so much fat.

Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, America's most trusted doctor team and authors of the bestselling YOU series, are now translating this cutting-edge information to help you shave inches off your waist. They're going to do it by giving you the best weapon against fat: knowledge. By understanding how your body's fat-storing and fat-burning systems work, you're going to learn how to crack the code on true and lifelong waist management.

Roizen and Oz will invigorate you with equal parts information, motivation, and change-your-life action to show you how your brain, stomach, hormones, muscles, heart, genetics, and stress levels all interact biologically to determine if your body is the size of a baseball bat or of a baseball stadium. In YOU: On a Diet, Roizen and Oz will redefine what a healthy figure is, then take you through an under-theskin tour of the organs that influence your body's size and its health. You'll even be convinced that the key number to fixate on is not your weight, but your waist size, which best indicates the medical risks of storing too much fat.

Because the world has almost as many diet plans as it has e-mail spammers, you'd think that just about all of us would know everything there is to know about dieting, about fat, and about the reasons why our bellies have grown so large. YOU: On a Diet is much more than a diet plan or a series of instructions and guidelines or a faddish berries-only eating plan. It's a complete manual for waist management. It will show you how to achieve and maintain an ideal and healthy body size by providing a lexicon according to which any weight-loss system can be explained. YOU: On a Diet will serve as the operating system that facilitates future evolution in our dieting software. After you learn about the biology of your body and the biology and psychology of fat, you'll be given the YOU Diet and YOU Workout. Both are easy to learn, follow, and maintain. Following a two-week rebooting program will help you lose up to two inches from your waist right from the start.

With Roizen and Oz's signature accessibility, wit, and humor, YOU: On a Diet -- The Owner's Manual for Waist Management will revolutionize the way you think about yourself and the food you consume, so that you'll diet smart, not hard. Welcome to your body on a diet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition - YOU on a Diet
I really enjoyed the content of this book, but it doesn't lend itself to the Kindle format. I see this book as a reference, and I wanted to look back to review - one of the weaknesses of Kindle is it isn't easy to leaf through the book and find a reference. So, for books like this, in the future, I will buy the hard copy version. As for the book itself, I liked it a lot. It starts with scientific analysis of how our bodies process food, but written in laymen's language, and ends with a detailed plan for diet and exercise - just my kind of plan.

Product Description

Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic system of anatomy. Yes, you've owned your skin-covered shell for decades, but you probably know more about your cell-phone plan than you do about your own body. When it comes to your longevity and quality of life, understanding your internal systems gives you the power, authority, and ability to live a healthier, younger, and better life.

The flagship book of the YOU series, which spawned three subsequent New York Times bestsellers, has now been expanded and updated to make you understand your body even better—perhaps too well.

YOU: The Owner's Manual, Updated and Expanded Edition challenges your preconceived notions about how the human body works and ages, then takes you on a tour through all of the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of you. In this update, the doctors have included a new chapter on the liver and pancreas, which will finally demystify the most exotic parts of our bodies; a new workout chapter that will finally get you moving; and nearly one hundred Q&As asked by you, the reader. It has also been updated throughout to give you up-to-the-minute know-how to not just understand what to do to keep fit, but also why and how.

The book opens with a quiz, "How Well Do You Know Your Body?," which sets the stage for the following chapters. After taking the quiz, you'll learn about all of your blood-pumping, food-digesting, and keys-remembering systems and organs, including the heart, brain, lungs, immune system, bones, and sensory organs. Each chapter also contains common myths of the particular body part that the authors will debunk.

Just as important, you'll get the facts and advice you need to keep your body running long and strong. You'll find out how diseases start and how they affect your body—as well as advice on how to prevent and beat conditions that threaten your quality of life. Complete with exercise tips, nutritional guidelines, simple lifestyle changes, and alternative approaches, YOU: The Owner's Manual, Updated and Expanded Edition gives you an easy, comprehensive, and life-changing how-to plan for fending off the gremlins of aging. To top it off, this new edition includes even more great-tasting and calorie-saving recipes as part of the Owner's Manual Diet—an eating plan that is designed with only one goal in mind: to help you live a younger life.

Welcome to your body. Why don't you come on in and take a look around?

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition not useful
The Kindle edition is extremely difficult to navigate. There is no table of contents and the index has page numbers while the navigation system has locations. You have to scroll forever to find the topic you are interested in. No navigable list of contents is a big mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Overview for Every "Owner"
Now that Dr. Oz is accessible to us all on TV each day, I'm particularly glad to have a couple of his books on-hand too. Like any instructional book, while they're well-written and easy to understand--as are his TV shows--my memory isn't quite what it once was. :-) I find this book helpful as an accessible overview for anyone who wants to understand the body's systems, how to live more healthily, and who longs for presentation of the subject matter in everyday language. My own work being in mind-body stress-relief, it's a book I recommend to clients for an introduction to body processes. 2-0 out of 5 stars not what i expected

5-0 out of 5 stars great book to turn your life around
Easy to understand on how our body works and steps to take to make your life better and live longer. Uses humor to help you remember things and helpful easy steps to take you there. The new updated version is better than the old and lots of information to learn and remember easy.

Product Description

Can I get a cavity filled while pregnant? Will avoiding spicy foods make my kid a picky eater? Can I really increase my baby's IQ while she's in utero?

Whether you're pregnant for the first time, are trying to start your family, or already have enough children to start your own basketball team, you're bound to have questions about what it means to be pregnant -- and how you can increase your odds of having a healthy and happy pregnancy. But no matter how much you've read, watched, studied, or talked about this amazing biological journey, you have never read anything like this.

In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz act as mythbusters for the hundreds of questions surrounding pregnancy in the same scientific, informative, and entertaining ways that have made them America's Doctors. In these pages, you'll learn everything you need to know about the miracles of fetal development, your health throughout the pregnancy, and providing the best possible environment for your growing child.

Pregnancy is a complicated balancing act, but it doesn't have to be frightening. The doctors will help you de-stress as they describe accurately and rationally what happens during a thrilling nine months of life. While every pregnant body is different, odds are you'll experience some of the cravings, crying, and discomfort that almost all women go through. Your best tactic? Learn why these things are happening -- and what you should do about them. YOU: Having a Baby will teach you everything you need to know about what to eat (should I be eating for two?), how much to exercise, and what guilty pleasures will actually make pregnancy easier on you (and the loved ones who get to be around you for the whole thing). Each phase of pregnancy has different challenges, but the right information will prepare you for what's ahead. The interactive week-by-week calendar inside provides an even more detailed guideline for how and what you should feel through every step of the process.

Exciting, cutting-edge scientific research in the fi eld of epigenetics has changed the way the medical profession looks at pregnancy, and now it can change your perspective, too. Epigenetics explores what makes us develop in certain ways -- why some people thrive at math while others are prone to chronic diseases. It turns out that there are easy things you can do that will not just help your baby's development in utero but will actually improve his or her chances of living a healthy, fulfi lling adult life.

Filled with recipes for nutritious, satisfying snacks and meals even Pop can cook (yes, he can!), safe exercises for staying fit, and tons of YOU tips that will help you stay comfortable, YOU: Having a Baby is the ultimate guidebook for what to do from the moment of conception to the weeks after your child has arrived home. From morning sickness and food cravings to choosing a doctor and changing a diaper, YOU: Having a Baby will give you the real scoop about what's in store for you during this amazing time in your life.

Customer Reviews

Average Customer Review: @new[19] out of 5 stars Based on 42 reviews.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some helpful information- probably shouldn't be your only pregnancy book
I'm pregnant for the third time, and most pregnancy books put me to sleep- no offense to any of them, but I have heard so much of the same info over and over. I enjoyed reading this book because it was so different than other pregnancy books. I found the descriptions of some of the biological processes at work to be pretty interesting (although the whole "epigenetics" phenomenon is greatly over-hyped: basically, all you need to do is eat healthy, avoid stress and quit smokin' and drinkin'.) The fact that the doctors are men and write from a male, medical perspective didn't bother me particularly either- I think I've read enough holistic earth-mama pregnancy books that I don't mind hearing a different take on pregnancy. Some of the puns and lame jokes and euphemisms for sex are annoying, but I'm kind of used to those in pregnancy books, and some of the jokes are actually funny. I agree that the pictures are weird but I think that's the style of this whole series. This wouldn't be a bad read to get some additional medical background on what's going on during your pregnancy, but I wouldn't use it as your primary reference book throughout the nine months.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reads better than other books, a lot of same info as elsewhere
I received this book as a gift during my current pregnancy. It has been ten years since my previous child. Where this book really shines is that it explains a lot of medical and science information in hip, fun ways. I earned a bachelor's degree in a biological science, so often I feel that books that are meant for the general public on medically related topics are dumbed down or so simplified they miss the point. Roizen and Oz have kept the why's and how's of what is happening in your body, and made a few very complicated ideas comprehensible to the general reader.
So why am I giving this book only three stars? To be fair, there are so many books available on pregnancy already it is hard to come up with something full of enough new and original information to get a book up to that five star status for this topic. The other reason is how the book is organized.
The authors decided to move away from the pregnancy week-by-week structure used in so many other pregnancy books. The book itself reads very well, if you are just sitting down to read all about pregnancy. I ran into trouble when I went back later looking for specific information that I knew I had read. I tried the index, but wasn't always able to find what I was looking for easily, leaving me to flip through pages until I happened across what I was looking for. The book does include information about common disorders, birthing and prenatal care options, nutrition and recipes, and exercise plans.
This book shined in getting me to really understand what was going inside my pregnant body. I am glad I own this book. What I would recommend is get a good classic week by week guide for your reference (often given for free at the OB's office nowadays) AND buy this book to sit down and read and understand what is happening with you and your baby.

2-0 out of 5 stars You Docs are getting more opinionated and less science backed
I just moved to a small town for work, and the second I found out I was pregnant I went to Walmart (no bookstore here) and bought every pregnancy book they had- "What to Expect" and this one. I am used to the "You" series and the strange cartoons, so the format wasn't as disappointing to me as it was to some other reviewers. Also, I should mention at this point I'm a medical doctor, so I can appreciate the You docs being up on current research (pushing resveratrol in 'You- Staying Young' and now DHA in 'You- Having a Baby'). However, it seems like half the book is spent trying to convince pregnant women to take DHA. One constant in medicine is that things change, and sometimes today's truth becomes tomorrow's embarrassment, so it seems less wise to me to push new, exciting supplements than to stress the things we've known for years. To that end, the You docs do tell you how to make your own Bendectin for morning sickness. That's why I give the book 2 stars instead of one.

My real beef is that for some reason the You Docs veer off course from the book's supposed focus of antenatal and postpartum issues to talk about vaccination of your child. While many pregnant women may have this on their minds, I do not believe this book is an appropriate place for the debate. The section claims to look at all sides (and then gives you the 'You Docs Take,' which is shamefully absent of any evidence). The reader is left wondering whether it wouldn't be better to avoid vaccinations. Much of the population still believes there is a cause and effect relationship between vaccines and autism, despite the discrediting of research that indicated a link. This is not the public's fault; however, I expect that two wealthy doctors who have access to any medical journal in the world could do the research FOR the layperson shelling out bucks for this book and at least paint an accurate picture of the current debate. The truth is, no link between vaccines and autism has been found, the Institute of Medicine has laid it to rest, and children are dying again from diseases which were supposed to be eradicated by vaccines, like whooping cough. Do you want your three month old to die because your neighbor refused to vaccinate her child?

Overall, the You Docs are just kind of 'out there' and it's obvious they can do whatever they want because they have a lot of money and notoriety. Dr. Oz tells you that he chose to vaccinate his kids the way they do in Europe, which involves less vaccines spaced farther apart. Good luck convincing your doctor to go along with that! Even though I could vaccinate my child personally in the office, I guess, I won't follow some European vaccination scheme because as soon as my maternity leave is up, I go back to work, and my kid gets to go to a child care center where, you guessed it, they require vaccinations. According to the U.S. schedule. And I'm ok with that.

2-0 out of 5 stars What is does well is condescending, what it doesn't do well is better found elsewhere
Having read a large number of books for my 1st pregnancy, I decided to buy this one for the second - in spite of the overall poor reviews. I, like others, was intrigued by the epigenetic discussion and had heard good things about the YOU books in general. I was sorely disappointed. For starters the epigenetic discussion is not only short, but confusing and failed to differentiate between things that were clinically proven to promote epigenetic changes (for instance smoking) from those that are merely the authors hypothesis (i.e., unhealthy eating in general). The end result was the conclusion on the epigenetic section read more like the "What to expect" best odds concept - we-have-no-proof-but-why-don't-we-try-to-make-you-do-these-things-anyway...

The strength of this book is that it does go into substantial detail on the changes taking place in your body due to pregnancy. The discussion on hormonal changes, fetal growth etc. are the most detailed I have read in any pregnancy book. Unfortunately, the same descriptions are sprinkled with gratuitous sarcastic comments which are either disturbing to anyone who believes woman have half a brain or someone with an actual sense of humor. In the interest of gathering the information I tried to ignore these BUT...I did put down the Kindle more than once because I could not go one.

The weakness of the book is that in addition to the medical detail, it tries to rapidly cover the typical pregnancy book topics - what to buy the for baby, how to prepare, how to chose an OB/GYN etc. These are covered in much less detail than other better books and read like a last minute add on.

If you are interested in medical details this book is excellent with the caveat of the annoying comments. If you want a good general pregnancy book, this certainly is not it. For people interested in non condescending detail as well as a high quality general guide, "I'm Pregnant" by Leslie Regan (a DK book) is excellent.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money.
What a stupid book. It's poorly organized, superficial, condescending, and glib--the humor is totally lame and not even appropriate at times. There's nothing here that you won't find in WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING, and you'll find a LOT more useful and well-organized advice in that book. The authors make a big deal about their discussion of epigenetics, but all it amounts to is the same advice you'll find elsewhere, and in better detail, about eating healthfully during pregnancy. Duh. The section on labor is too short and, like the rest of the book, is illustrated with grotesque, ill-conceived drawings that will only serve to heighten women's fears about pain. Just about every topic is handled too briefly, including such important topics as circumsion, making this book an insult to thinking women who really would like to know in depth what's going on with their babies and their bodies. The authors clearly rushed through this book to beef up their "You" series and horn in on the pregnancy market. Terrible. ... Read more

From the Authors of the #1 Bestselling YOU: On A Diet and YOU: On a Walk

Wouldn't you like to know how to prevent your body from aging badly? Most of us believe that at age 40 or so, we begin the slow and steady decline of our minds and bodies. According to Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz, that's a mistake. Aging isn't a decline in our systems. It's actually very purposeful. The very systems and biological processes that age us are designed to help us when we're a little bit younger. Our role is to learn how those systems function so we can reprogram them to work the way they did when we were younger. Your goal should be: die young at any age. That means you live a high quality of life (with everything from working joints to working genitals) until the day you die.

At the core of YOU: Staying Young are the Major Agers -- 14 biological processes that control your rate of aging. Doctors Roizen and Oz explain the principles of longevity and many of the causes of aging and how to fight their effects. Also included in a printable PDF file is a 14-day plan to help you integrate important processes into your daily life in order to make staying young routine.

YOU: Staying Young is filled with signature YOU Tools, including YOU tips and memorable metaphors to bring the science alive and help you understand the most fascinating machine ever created: the human body.

Amazon.com Review

The body is the most fascinating machine ever created, and nobody talks about it in ways that are as illuminating and compelling as Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz. Most people think of the aging of our bodies the same way we think of the aging of our cars: the older we get, the more inevitable it is that we're going to break down. Most of us believe that at age 40 or so, we begin the slow and steady decline of our minds, our eyes, our ears, our joints, our arteries, our libido, and every other system that affects the quality of life (and how long we live it). But according to Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz, that's a mistake.

Aging isn't a decline in our systems. It's actually very purposeful. The very systems and biological processes that age us are designed to help us when we're a little bit younger. So what's our role as part of the aging population? To learn how those systems work so we can reprogram them to work the way they did when we were younger. Your goal should be: die young at any age. That means you live a high quality of life (with everything from working joints to working genitals) until the day you die.

At the core of this landmark book are the Major Agers--14 biological processes that control your rate of aging. Some you've heard of, some you haven't, and some you never knew contributed to the aging process. Some speed decline, others inhibit your repair mechanisms. These Major Agers are everything from short telomeres and inefficient mitochondria to stem cells and wacky hormones. The doctors explain the principles of longevity and many of the causes of aging and how to fight the effects. The climax of the book is a 14-day plan to help you along your path to staying young. The doctors want you to be able to integrate important processes into your daily life in order to make staying young routine, but first you'll need to measure your real age and health right now. Staying young encompasses your emotions and mental health as well as your exercise habits, eating habits, personal hygiene, and genes, among other things.

Wouldn't you like to know how to prevent your body from aging badly? The original YOU book showed how bodies work in general, and YOU: On a Diet explained how bodies lose weight and stay fit. Now in YOU: Staying Young, Drs. Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz illuminate the mysterious mechanisms with a lively metaphor -- the modern city. What differentiates a vibrant and thriving city that ages gracefully from one that is worn down and rusted out? Despite genetic differences, which are like the geography upon which the city is built, cities age differently because of the way residents treat their education system (stem cells), power plants (mitochondria), electrical grids (brains), transportation routes (blood vessels), and landfills (fat). You -- as mayor, resident, and street cleaner -- have the power to balance your biological budget to ensure a life that's both long and strong. Thankfully, just as cities can invest in renewal and improving their repair processes, so can you.

YOU: Staying Young is filled with signature YOU Tools, including YOU Tests, YOU Tips, and visual and verbal metaphors to bring the science to life.

A Letter from Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz

Dear Amazon Shoppers:

Our books, YOU: The Owner’s Manual and YOU: On a Diet, have become #1 Amazon and New York Times bestsellers, and we thank you. Many people have asked us questions about aging. We want you to know that the science in the last very few years has challenged the very perceptions of aging.

Most of us tend to have the same view of the way people age: As we grow older, we start losing things. We lose some hair, lose our minds, lose our balance, lose our eyesight, lose a little of this and a lot of that until we eventually wither away into a hunched-over senior who takes 3-inch steps and eats dinner at 4:00 pm. But to think that a life of frailty is an inevitable outcome of aging is a mistake. And the fact that we don't take control of it is because we have excuses. We live in a society where making excuses is as easy as making a sandwich. Nowhere is that more apparent than when it comes to your own health. The reason why we are frazzled with stress? Blame the boss. The reason why we are sick? Blame the sniffling kids. The reason why our society’s waistbands are stretching and snapping at alarming rates? Blame Auntie's alfredo sauce. The top health excuse, however, revolves around the biggest four-letter word of them all, the GENE. We blame our genes for just about everything--for baldness, for fatness, for illness and for every other health-related problem we can think of. In our minds, that means that our mom, pop, and the rest of the family tree are all on the hook for the ultimate health question of them all--how long and how well we will live?

But that is exactly where more of us have it wrong. While we are certainly born with genes that help determine everything from our height to our risk of heart disease, we are making a monumental mistake by assuming that we can’t control our genes--especially when it comes to aging.

Perhaps the best way to explain the dynamics of aging is to take a look at another complex system that is subjected to the same forces as your body: a city. Some cities remain beautiful and elegant in their old age, while younger ones may look worn down and beat-up. Now, every city has its own genetic code, just as you do. For a city, genes are geography; whether it's built on a river or whether it's located in a hot or cold climate, or whether it lies directly in a prevalent hurricane path. A city's geography can't change. But the city can adapt to the environment with earthquake-proof construction, with underground tunnels for walking in wintertime, or with strong levies. The adaptation the city makes to survive and to thrive is what is crucial to its vitality.

The same goes for you.

Just because you have been dealt a genetic hand that predisposes you to heart disease or diabetes or the wearing of pants as large as a parachute doesn't mean you can't mitigate the effects of those genes. One of the major things we will teach you is that while you can't change your genes, you can change whether they are turned on or off or how you express them. Just like a city, you can compensate elegantly if you understand your options.

For the first time in history, the medical world has uncovered many of the miraculous biologic processes that control how and why we age. Truth is, much of aging is actually in our control; with the power to nudge our biologic systems so that our unwanted genes can work in our favor--as long as you know what to do and how you are doing it. In YOU: Staying Young, we translate the latest science (much of which wasn't available even three years ago) to help slow your rate of aging. You will learn 14 Major Agers, and dozens of action steps so that you can take control of those agers and your aging processes.

We hope you enjoy the cartoons, analogies, and jokes. But ultimately we hope you soak in the message: Your health is largely in your control. We dedicate the book to all who desire longer life so they can serve more.

Thanks very much,

Mike and Mehmet

Questions for the Doctors

Q: What is the single most important thing someone can do to combat aging?

A: To understand that you get to control your rate of aging if you want to. It isn't that hard and doesn't take that long. In fact, even if you have had burgers for breakfast or fried your brain cells with stress by noon, you're not necessarily destined to wear husky pants, forget birthdays, and spiral into a state of complete upheaval. That's right: You get a do-over in life if you want it. Repeat after us: not hard, not long.

Q: Is there one food, vitamin, mineral, exercise, or lifestyle change that does more to combat aging than any other?

A: Our top choices in terms of ease and impact:

  • Walk 30 minutes a day and call someone after you do it. No excuses, walk every day. If you do it, you'll have the courage, health, and attitude to adopt other changes too.
  • Take 2 grams of omega-3 fats every day in form of either walnuts, fish oil, or DHA supplements.

Q: What is one of the most surprising contributors to aging that we can easily remove from our lifestyles?

A: Inflammation of our teeth. Remove it with daily flossing and brushing and seeing a dental professional regularly. You won't just save your teeth; you'll also go a long way in saving your heart and arteries. Another? Our lack of turmeric--curry and mustard (mustard on stadium hot dogs does not qualify). Both of those ingredients make your memory better.

Q: What are some of the immediate benefits you will notice from following the tips in the book?

A: You will feel younger. You might get hit upon by strangers or be mistaken for someone 20 years younger. In addition to the waist size you'll lose, your new attitude and vitality for life may give your reading choice away.

Q: How early should most people start to focus on slowing the aging process?

A: The aging process starts in your teens or even before, but any time you start is better than later. (Repeat: not hard, not long.) Your cells basically have a memory of three years. So by changing your habits now, within three years, it's as if you have done your healthy habit all your life.

4-0 out of 5 stars You.---Staying younger
Book is full of good facts and advice. Written almost like a textbook. I'll never remember all!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a winner!
This book gives good information on living an optimally healthy lifestyle. It is written is language that is easy to understand and focuses on both men and women's health. Drs. Oz and Roisen explain many of the underlying causes of common ailments and diseases and more important how to alleviate them through easily doable lifestyle habits of diet and exercise. This one is well worth the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Authors present their ideas clearly and humorously
Drs. Roizen and Oz review the systems of our aging bodies. Better yet, they provide some "signature" YOU tips to stay young at any age. Quality of life requires a degree of effort. I cannot think of anything more important than keeping my independence. This particular CD flows easily. The authors present their ideas clearly and humorously. This combination works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Good, Just Don't Take the Tests
For the most part this is a well written book packed with useful information. I just wish that someone had reviewed the mental acuity tests included. They're chock full of ridiculous errors. I mean, didn't anyone on the editing team even look closely at these pathetic mind games? Other than that oversight, I fully enjoyed the book and its relevant content.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift
This was a gift to a friend, and his wife, who was wanting to do all he could to add to his success in living a long life. They both have numerous medical conditions. He is still reading it and commented that he intended to re read it. He is very proactive in searching for ways to take better care of himself.
His wife, however, in the past has given up and doesn't try anymore, much to his dismay. Since receiving this book as a Christmas gift, his wife now says she is waiting for him to finish it, so she can begin reading it. He is hopeful that it will cause her to rethink her present outlook on her health. She has given up on trying to get any better, when she could turn things around. It was a gift in hopes of prompting her to take better care of herself.
He says he is learning a great deal from the book and is putting into practice the suggestions put forward in the book.
I think I need to order a copy for myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Us Transforming Ourselves
Wow! this book is fun to read and inspiring to see that we can make adjustments in our own relations. Entertaining and practicle It has lots of parenting and relationship stories to chuckle about and identify with... I do like the way Lisa gets you to see that change is possible with guidance and understanding that all things are possible. A great book to read together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt & Serious book
This is an easy to read guide that is not condescending or too full of psycho-babble. This is really just a simple guide to try to improve the person you are, and hence the relationships that revolve around you. It touches on the cores of self-respect, change, sex and family.
I found it full of practical exercises that aren't difficult to implement.
Most people would probably benefit from this if the enacted even a third of what is offered here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of 2010?
This might be my favorite book of 2010 so far. Lots of stuff was clicking for me. I listened to the audio book - Lisa narrates it. Good voice for reading.

This book definitely made me think about what I truly value in life and how I treat those around me. I picked up countless tips that I've already applied to my daily life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom and Humor
It was pure pleasure to read "US," Lisa Oz's book on relationships. The prose is sharp, funny and assessible. Imagine sitting down in your kitchen with a very wise friend and having her answer all your questions about life, love, sex, happiness and relationships. In her answers she will stimulate you, challenge you and definitely make you rethink your priorities and pasttimes.

This is quintesentially a spiritual book. God floats throughout the pages. Oz gets her life priorities straight from the very beginning. Her inspiration is Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish scientist, mystic and quirky philosopher who lived not too long after Shakespeare died.
Know this going in and you will be alert to appreciating the insightful ideas Oz quotes as well as some more confusing, even baffling ideas that you can just leave on the page. None of these ideas, however, will make you run sceaming from the room, your fingers held up in a cross.

I've seldom read a book with such a light touch even when it's going to a great depth. Here's Oz giving us a cure for unhappiness in three sentences: "We all play a role in our conflicts. At some point we need to take responsibility for that. Once we do, we give ourselves the power to break the pattern." She intersperses these plain and pithy observations with her own personal failings -- and we love her the more for it. A very worthwhile read.

5-0 out of 5 stars "God is. We are always becoming."
I admit it - my first thought upon seeing that Lisa Oz had written a book was that she was attempting to capitalize upon her husband's celebrity. Her husband, of course, being Dr. Oz - the whirlwind physician first made famous by Oprah. I probably even rolled my eyes (bad habit) as I turned away. But then I started hearing positive comments. Stories that suggested this WASN'T one of those "he's-famous-now-look-at-me" books. Curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to take a look for myself. I'm glad I did.

Lisa Oz has created a self-help book that actually makes sense. She's very honest in saying that, while the book is full of things she tries to live by, she also fails. Frequently. She speaks of God often, but also does not hesitate to say that she believes that God is something different for everyone - that "he...uses varied language and a different voice..." in order to reach different people. In fact, she herself is a believer in the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. So while I was initially hesitant that much of the book is tied up in a relationship with God, I also understood her point that God is many things to many people - and if picturing a "swirling universe" works better for some, then so be it.

The main goal behind this book is to help people better themselves, and by extension, their relationships. Relationships with themselves, with their significant others, with their communities, their earth and with their God. There are no simple answers presented in this book - rather, there are ways to learn new thinking and new behaviors. There are exercises that can be completed (or not) as you please. But most of all, there is just a voice of common sense and reason - something that has, sadly, become endangered in today's world.

I finished reading the book. Now, I am working on reading through it again - not in order, but in places where I feel the need to pay more attention. I'm not a huge fan of self-help books, because I tend to feel that few of them are worth more than a token glance. They are designed for a very small, specific audience. This is one of the few that has the potential to be helpful to EVERYONE who takes the time to read it. I urge you to give this book a shot - it might surprise you just as much as it did me. ... "Fat Chances: The Secret Story of What's in Your Belly" by Michael F. Roizen, MD, and Mehmet C. Oz, MD
Whether you're carrying a few extra pounds of fat on your thighs or a suitcase's worth in your belly, it's hard not to think about fat. You feel it when you walk, you roll on it when you sleep, and you curse it when you try to slide into last year's jeans. But while most of us are intimately familiar with how fat looks on the outside, we're not quite as familiar with how it works on the inside.

As we explain in YOU: On a Diet, we believe that to change your body, you need to know your body.

In the simplest form, everyone knows the formula for gaining weight. Daily buckets of ranch dip plus photo-album-sized hunks of cheesecake plus a life of couch-dwelling equals a very unfortunate conclusion: too-frequent popped buttons.

But many of us really don't know how fat works and how it works against us. Here's the inside story on the story of your insides.

5-0 out of 5 stars You On A Diet
The recipes are quite good & easy to make... I even have my husband eating them... he's a non-veggie eater...I also like that the emphasis is put on your waist size & not your weight size... the only thing they don't mention in the recipes are your choice of liquid drink... of course water is always good, but I'd keep them low cal & lay off the sodas... all in all... I'm quite satisfied with the menus & recommended exercises in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Rented at library and really wanted to buy it. checked amazon and couldn't resist the price. it was listed in like new condition and it was! very happy with book and service.

5-0 out of 5 stars diet book
Bought this book for my husband, he has been reading it on his own. No need for nagging, he likes Dr. Oz this might just do it.

2-0 out of 5 stars rambles
This rambles on and it makes it difficult to read. There may be good information but it is difficult to focus and find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars not a manual, but a great book
I love this book. I am not much of a reader. But i found it easy to read this book. and it talks beyond the regular "what to eat" and waht not to eat" kind of book. It goes in the "whys", why to eat something.

I follow the simple takeaways and can already see the impact. for e.g. i eat handful of nuts before my meal and i dont feel hungry anymore.

It is very importmant to understadn how different chemicals impact your hunger levels, and food help control them.

Again this book is not a manual with a list of foods and their calorie values. Its more of understanding the inside of you body and brain as it pertains to loosing weight.

Product Description

Most people think that beauty revolves around such things as lipstick, sweet eyes, or skinny jeans -- all those things that we can see (and obsess over) in the mirror. But the fact is that beauty isn't some superficial pursuit, and it's not some random act that you can thank (or curse) your ancestors for.

There are, in fact, scientific standards to beauty. Beauty is purposeful, because it's how humans have historically communicated who we are to potential mates. Beauty, in fact, is really about your health and happiness.

In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Michael F. Roizen and Dr. Mehmet C. Oz bust the myths and stereotypes about the way we view ourselves -- and how we define beauty. In these pages, you'll find out why beauty isn't as much about your vanity as it is about your humanity. The doctors take a scientific, informative, and entertaining look at the three levels of beauty and explain how they all work together to form a complete and authentic YOU. Those three levels of beauty are:

  • Looking Beautiful: Your appearance influences your self-esteem and has major health implications. Here, the docs will tell you how you can look the way you want.
  • Feeling Beautiful: So what if you have luscious lips or gorgeous locks if your joints creak and you have the energy of a rug? The docs will tell you how to improve your energy levels, beat back your life-altering aches and pains, and come to grips with some of life's toughest stresses.
  • Being Beautiful: By improving your relationships with your loved ones as well as with others, you'll be well on your way to finding true happiness. That's the ultimate goal: Having all three levels of beauty working together so you can have a happy and healthy life.

You'll start off by taking the ultra-revealing and validated YOU-Q Test to help you assess where you are on your own beauty scale and where you want to be. Take the test, see how well you do; then use the book to help you improve your score.

With their usual candor and honesty, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz break down the mechanics of beauty and explain how little adjustments in your routine can help you become a happier, healthier person. You will learn about the biology of beauty, take YOU Tests to determine where you are on the beauty scale, get tons of YOU Tips to help you improve your life, as well as learn the secrets of the Ultimate Beautiful Day.

From hair to toenails, Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz go through every part of your body to explain how different foods, vitamins, creams, gels, and injections can really boost your looks. They scrutinize the beauty myths that bombard us every day and offer an unbiased perspective on which ones cause more harm than good. You will be able to revamp your beauty regimen (or start a new one from scratch). They'll also take a close look at chronic pain, mood swings, low energy, and financial stresses. And they'll dive into the science of building relationships, finding happiness, and using spirituality to help you define your own levels of true beauty.

Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz act as tour guides navigating the tricky but exciting terrain of today's beauty industry. YOU: Being Beautiful is your all-inclusive ticket into the world -- the real world -- of beauty.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped
The beginning of the book was great. The questions to help you asses where you stand in terms of your ideal beauty were great. After that the book went downhill fast. All of the information was very general. I was hoping for specific information on how to improve my hair, skin, and body shape. Or maybe tutorials or product suggestions. Unless you need to learn what vitamins are good for you, how to wash your hair, and how to cut your toenails, I would skip this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult audiobook for continual listening but full of good professional advice
The only way I can listen to this book is one half a CD at a time, randomly and not in order. That's because I got no sense of where the authors were going in general despite the catchy title. In all this I think it's a 4-star only because the two doctors provide a wealth of information, however scattered, that can help us all to live the healthy life.

In my opinion there's yet a need for more (and hopefully better) books on health based on medical research. While several have been produced recently, much more is required. This genre can help us counter the unhealthy messages we receive from the advertising industry and from the culture at large.

Many useful tidbits of information were included in this book to make it worth the price. That's a fact. Getting there requires perhaps some effort on the part of the listener (I have the audiobook), but maybe it's unrealistic to expect a fun book about what the medical research has to say concerining healthy living.

At times the research is hard to follow. For example, at times the doctors cite eight or more vitamins and minerals that are useful for a particular body function or part. After awhile, to be quite direct, I got the impression that all vitamins and minerals meant for a human diet are just incredibly important. There comes a time when you have put so many members in a set that no member seems that important anymore.

Of all the things in this book that impressed me and made me think this is better than a 3-star book, it was the doctors' lecture on the medical importance of spirituality. I didn't expect this and didn't want it, initially. Yet what they had to stay was very important and it took courage for them to cite the research they did and deliver their findings. They feel spirituality is extremely important for health.

I recommend this book but only if you understand it's not really entertaining and it feels rambling. You have to use it in a way that works for you. The information is valuable.

4-0 out of 5 stars You, Being Beautiful
This is a well written book that covers all aspects of diet, health, and beauty. I originally checked it out from the library. It was so good, and had so much information that I decided that I had to have it for my own. I am well pleased with this book. I am still reading it and use it as a reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information
Learned a lot from reading this book. Highly recommend it to anyone interested in health.

2-0 out of 5 stars borrow from library before you waste your money
I've always liked Dr. Oz but was pretty disappointed. The only thing I enjoyed about the book was his philosophy on beauty (wich you can just read on the back cover). That being beutiful is totally within your own control and to stop blaming your appearance on other things or people. But with that being said, don't expect any delicious beauty tools or advice.

You can tell he loves science because that is mostly what the book is about. Instead of giving some good advice on acne he spends several pages/illustrations on how your skin works, why you hair gets fuzzy, how depression affects your appearance, etc etc.

When he does get around to trying to give us women some tips they are disappointing. The book is filled (and I mean brimming) with "duhs" like, "You should always brush out your hair before you get in the shower to wash it," and "Getting your rest is an important part of looking good," or, "It's important to wash your face every morning and night." Isn't that your mother's job to teach you that in 6th grade?

The illustrations are bad too. They're actually pretty wierd. Overall this book was totally unappealing to me. I would recommend Bobbi Brown Beauty: The Ultimate Beauty Resource ... Read more

Product Description

"The medicine of the new millennium."--Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words

Dr. Mehmet Oz, celebrated heart surgeon and co-founder of the Complementary Care Center at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, is spearheading the health-care revolution that is yielding powerful new healing tools that will forever change the way we think of medicine. In this ground-breaking book, he describes his pioneering work--combining cutting-edge Western medicine with such Eastern techniques as acupuncture and chi-gong, as well as such controversial therapies as hypnosis, music, massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and energy healing. The inspiring and affecting stories of his patients are the heart of this book--from the extraordinary discipline of Frank Torre, who used his professional sports training to "psych" himself into healing after heart transplant surgery, to the "impossible" recovery of blues great Johnny Copeland, who was roused from a seemingly impenetrable coma through the force of his own music. In recounting his patients' experiences, Dr. Oz forges a blueprint for the radical new medicine of the next millennium--drawing on the best from Eastern and Western therapies and empowering patients to become partners with doctors in promoting their own recovery.

Amazon.com Review

Mehmet Oz is a Renaissance man of cardiac care, combining yoga, aromatherapy, hypnosis, energy healing, music therapy, acupuncture, and visual imagery into his surgery practice at the Complementary Care Unit of New York City's Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He's adamant that the relationship between traditional and alternative medicine should be symbiotic, not mutually exclusive. His patients are proof of this: when treated holistically, not as just "another transplant patient" with a plaque-addled heart, they perceive less pain during surgery and recuperation, are less likely to suffer depression, and heal more quickly.

While med school at the University of Pennsylvania didn't expose Oz to the holistic healing methods he employs today, his upbringing in Turkey and exposure to cultures worldwide did leave him open to new ideas. Oz helped develop the LVAD, or left ventricular assist device, which helps the heart of a patient awaiting a transplant keep pumping. Piqued when he was asked about his patients, "But has restoring their hearts restored their health?"--and he had to respond, "No"--Oz started incorporating one alternative method after another into his practice. He started with massage after seeing how it rejuvenated his wife after childbirth.

Healing from the Heart is not for the weak of stomach; Oz occasionally gets graphic, such as in the opening heart-transplant scene: "I finished closing the last tiny bleeder, then called for the electric saw, which was plugged in and handed to me by its metallic handle ... the saw cut through the bone like soft pine." If there's anything that might inspire you to pass up greasy French fries, this book is it. Current cardiac patients and their families will be enthralled by the tale of Oz's holistic revolution and his patient-success stories, and other health practitioners would do well to pay attention to what he advocates. --Erica Jorgensen

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing from the Heart
In my opinion, this should be required reading for all physicians. Maybe on a regular basis to keep it fresh in their minds. Good food for thought for patients also. The body-mind connection is real.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing From The Heart by Mehmet C. Oz. M.D.
A delightfully written story and very easy to understand by the layman. This world famous heart surgeon shares insight into his life and profession. He relates so well with the average person, that you feel as though you know him on a personal level. A very brilliant man with a very humble approach to life and our human suffering. He definitely has learned to heal others, because of his own love for humanity with genuine compassion. An amazing teacher!

1-0 out of 5 stars QUACK
oprah claims to have the BEST of everything. she's doing herself and more importantly, the public a tremendous disservice by touting this "doctor" all over the airwaves. for dysfunctional thyroid he claims you can "cure" a lack of proper hormone function with "mind over body" techniques.

most won't catch on until someone ends up in the hospital. i thought the man was a cardiologist? the truth is he knows little else outside of his specialty. and as he begins to touch on other areas of which he has no training whatsoever, i for one feel the need to question how versed he is in his own field.

just a little food for thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of his personal journey into and through a holistic surgical practice
This is an easy read by a most interesting surgeon who shares the story of his personal journey into and through a holistic surgical practice. Oz is Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College. His claim to fame, besides having been featured recently over an extended period on the Oprah show (well after this book was written), is that he incorporates a spectrum of complementary therapies in his practice. These include homeopathy, nutritional and vitamin supplements, acupuncture, massage and bioenergy healing. The open-mindedness of Oz to these therapies is very unusual for a surgeon.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
I completely enjoyed this book. It is not a self help book dealing with heart disese. It is more a memoir of Dr Oz's experiences with his patients over the years. He talks about different (usually chinese based) methods he has learned about and tried and the positive outcomes he has experienced. The book is very personable and interesting. ... Read more
